History

The Wehl Street Theatre was built in 1877 and opened as the first public primary school in Mount Gambier in 1878.

It remained a school for 78 years before becoming a theatre in the mid 1950’s and now is owned by the City of Mount Gambier.

The building and it’s attached East Wing are leased and managed by Centrestage Community Inc.

The Wehl Street Theatre has been renovated to a high standard for its use as performance venue.

Lighting, Dressing Rooms, Technical Bio-box, Kitchen, Raked Seating, and most recently our Yamaha C6 piano. We have a full viewing screen for films with projector. The East Wing room is carpeted, air-conditioned with a fridge and an urn is available.

We play host to numerous events throughout the year including the Mount Gambier Eisteddfod, Vocal & Choral Competitions and the Limestone Coast Choral & Vocal Showcase.

Although it’s heritage building, it’s still fully adaptable to the performance of dance, music and acting with our 220 seat auditorium. It has been used for fashion shows and conferences.

It’s part of the community and for the community.

Centrestage Community Theatre Inc continue to work towards updating this facility.
